Most adults feel that their oral hygiene habits are just fine and don’t require any improvement—especially if they have not been recently diagnosed with a cavity. However, the beginnings of tooth decay can go undetected and build up until a cavity is actually formed. Therefore, keeping current and not complacent about at-home oral hygiene is beneficial to your oral health and well-being. That’s why we encourage you to improve your brushing and flossing with these tips!
Though most patients understand the importance of flossing, some aren’t sure where flossing should take place in the daily oral hygiene routine. Flossing thoroughly between all your teeth, top and bottom, should be done before you start brushing. This is because flossing loosens up material between teeth and plaque that has built up at the gumline. Brushing after you floss helps get rid of this loosened material, so it doesn’t re-settle in your mouth.
It can be difficult to remember to switch to a new toothbrush on schedule. We become so used to our toothbrush for our daily routine that we may forget it should be replaced every couple of months, if not sooner. It might be helpful to choose one day a week when you check the condition of your toothbrush, especially the bristles. If anything looks worn or like it needs to be replaced, you should do so as soon as possible. This, along with carefully rinsing your toothbrush after each use, will help keep your toothbrush and your mouth as fresh and clean as possible.
Your oral health and well-being should be a priority. When you come in for your next appointment to have an exam and professional cleaning, you can consult our dental care team about proper oral hygiene habits and inquire whether you can make any improvements in your brushing and flossing technique. Our staff is pleased to offer guidance and support so that you achieve and maintain excellent oral health and wellness!
